Katov dom

About

Katov dom, the Executioner’s House in Trenčín, is one of the city’s most atmospheric historical buildings, standing just below the castle rock. Dating back to the 16th century, it once served as the residence and workplace of the town’s executioner—an essential but socially isolated figure. Because executioners were considered “unclean,” their homes were usually placed at the edge of town life, yet close enough to courts and prisons. This gives the house its distinctive mix of seclusion and strategic location. Inside, visitors find an evocative museum dedicated to medieval and early‑modern justice. Original torture instruments, shackles, and interrogation tools illustrate the harsh legal practices of the period, while detailed panels explain how trials, punishments, and public executions were carried out. One room reconstructs the executioner’s living quarters, offering a rare glimpse into the daily life of a man both feared and needed. The building’s thick walls, low ceilings, and preserved wooden beams add to the immersive atmosphere, making Katov dom one of Trenčín’s most memorable historical stops.

Katov dom is the only preserved Renaissance bourgeois house of its kind in Trenčín. Built around 1607 as a stone house, it is the only such building in the city that has kept its original shape without major later changes. The house is famous for its Renaissance architecture with a wooden circular balcony and for its dark history, as it was the residence of the town’s executioner (kata) in the 17th century and served as a prison with a dark dungeon in the basement. Today, the Trenčianske múzeum manages the house and has created three engaging exhibitions inside. Visitors can see the original tools of the executioner, including swords, axes, chains, and a replica of the torture instrument, as well as uniforms and weapons of the old town police. Other exhibitions explore local crafts and guilds, and the daily life of the bourgeoisie in Trenčín. Near Katov dom, you can walk up the street to Trenčín Castle, the medieval fortress on a rocky hill with another museum and panoramic views of the valley. Beneath the castle, you can see the Roman rock inscription from Laugaricio, an ancient Roman military outpost. In the town center, close by, are the main square (Mierové námestie), the City Tower, the Baroque Piarist Church of St. Francis Xaversky, the Morový stĺp (plague column), and the Miloš Alexander Bazovský Gallery, making this a perfect area for a cultural day trip in western Slovakia.
