Trenčín Synagogue

About

Trenčín Synagogue is one of the most striking architectural monuments in the city, a rare example of Moorish‑Byzantine style in Slovakia. Built in 1913 for a thriving Jewish community, it reflects the confidence and cultural openness of the era, with its onion‑shaped dome, decorative arches, and richly patterned façade. Although the synagogue suffered damage and neglect during the 20th century, careful restoration has brought back much of its original splendour. Inside, visitors enter a spacious hall crowned by a painted dome and surrounded by galleries supported by slender columns. The restored interior blends historical elements with a modern cultural function: the synagogue now serves as a concert and exhibition venue, known for its excellent acoustics and atmospheric lighting. Traces of its original purpose remain visible in decorative motifs, Hebrew inscriptions, and the preserved women’s gallery. The building stands today not only as a memorial to Trenčín’s Jewish heritage but also as one of the city’s most beautiful cultural spaces.

Location

The Trenčín Synagogue is an imposing building of distinctive Byzantine and Maur-Oriental design, with Art Nouveau elements and a green dome, prominently situated near the center of the city. Construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1913, making it one of the most beautiful synagogues in Slovakia from the early 20th century. Near the synagogue, you can explore Ľudovít Štúr Square and the adjacent lively Mierové Square with its colorful historic buildings, the Baroque Plague Column, and the 15th-century City Tower that serves as the gateway to the square. The historic Upper City Gate is just a short walk away. The impressive medieval Trenčín Castle on the hill above offers a museum, Matúšova veža tower, dungeon, bastion, and panoramic views of the valley. Beneath the castle, you can see the Roman rock inscription from Laugaricio, an ancient Roman military outpost. Other nearby attractions include the Renaissance Katov dom (Executioner’s House), the Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier, the Parish Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary on Mariánske Square with the Karner sv. Michala ossuary, and the Župný dom (County House) housing the Trenčianske múzeum. The beautiful Bojnice Castle with zoo and spa, the castle ruins of Beckov, and the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice are also easily reachable as day trips from Trenčín.
