Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie

About

Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie is one of Trenčín’s oldest and most quietly impressive churches, standing just below the castle and forming part of the city’s medieval core. First mentioned in the 14th century, it originally served as the parish church before St. Michael’s took over that role. Its architecture blends late Gothic foundations with later Baroque modifications, reflecting centuries of rebuilding after fires and shifting liturgical tastes. Inside, the church offers a serene, harmonious space. The Baroque main altar dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary draws the eye with its sculpted figures and soft gilding, while side altars display devotional paintings linked to local guilds and noble families. Visitors can also notice fragments of older Gothic stonework and a beautifully carved pulpit that survived earlier renovations. The church’s position on a slope gives it an unusual interior layout, adding to its character. Today, it remains a peaceful spiritual refuge and a reminder of Trenčín’s long religious tradition.

The Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie is one of the most valuable and oldest sacred buildings in Trenčín. Founded around 1324, it was built on the site of an older chapel on Mariánska hora (Marienberg hill). The church was reconstructed in the first half of the 15th century and later extended between 1553 and 1560 by Tobias Sebastiano and Mikuláš Bussi. Together with the adjacent charnel house (Karner sv. Michala), the town rectory, and the former armory, it formed part of the town’s historic fortifications that protected the road leading to the castle. Near the church, you can visit the Karner sv. Michala ossuary museum, then continue up the scenic Parish Stairways—a charming historic staircase that winds through quiet surroundings toward Trenčín Castle. The impressive medieval castle on the hill above offers a museum, Matúšova veža tower, dungeon, bastion, and panoramic views of the valley. Back in the old town, you can explore the Baroque Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier on Mierové Square, the 15th-century City Tower, the Plague Column, the historic City Gate, the Renaissance Katov dom (Executioner’s House), and the Roman rock inscription from Laugaricio beneath the castle. The beautiful Bojnice Castle with its zoo and spa, the castle ruins of Beckov, and the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice are also easily reachable as day trips from Trenčín.
