Múzeum v Kežmarku - Múzeum bytovej kultúry

About

The Museum of Housing Culture in Kežmarok is one of the most atmospheric heritage museums in northern Slovakia, offering a vivid journey into the domestic life of the town’s burghers from the 16th to the 19th century. Housed in a historic townhouse, it preserves original interiors that reveal how families lived, worked, and decorated their homes across different eras. An interesting fact is that several rooms retain authentic painted ceilings and wall stencilling, rare survivals that show the tastes of Kežmarok’s prosperous guild members. Visitors can explore the bourgeois parlour with its carved furniture, porcelain, and embroidered textiles, followed by the kitchen section displaying traditional cookware, tiled stoves, and tools used in everyday food preparation. The bedroom exhibits reveal the evolution of local craftsmanship, from hand‑woven linens to ornate chests decorated with folk motifs. One of the most engaging parts of the museum is its collection of guild artefacts, which illustrate the strong artisan traditions that shaped the town’s identity. Together, these interiors form a richly detailed portrait of urban life in historic Kežmarok.
