Redoute Theatre

About

The Redoute Theatre in Kežmarok is a graceful reminder of the town’s vibrant cultural life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Built as a multifunctional social hall, it hosted balls, concerts, civic gatherings, and theatrical performances—earning the name “Redoute,” a term traditionally used for elegant dance and event venues. An interesting fact is that the building once served as a key meeting point for Kežmarok’s multilingual community, where German, Slovak, and Hungarian performances all shared the same stage. Inside, the theatre preserves its historic auditorium with a compact horseshoe layout, decorative plasterwork, and warm wooden elements that create an intimate atmosphere. The foyer displays period photographs and posters documenting the cultural life of the town, while the stage area—though modest in size—remains suitable for chamber concerts, recitals, and community events. The building’s architecture blends late‑historicist forms with subtle Art Nouveau influences, visible in its façade details and interior ornamentation. Today, the Redoute continues to serve as a cultural venue, linking Kežmarok’s past with its contemporary artistic scene.

Location

The Redoute (Reduta) in Kežmarok is a historic building located at Hlavné námestie 3 on the Main Square in the heart of Kežmarok's historic center, in the Spiš region of eastern Slovakia. The building was originally constructed in Renaissance style in the 17th century and was later rebuilt in classical architecture at the beginning of the 19th century. The exterior of the historic Redoute was reconstructed and restored to its original form in 2022 after more than 1.5 years of renovation work. The interior was already reconstructed in 2017, and the first and second floors are now used by the city hall (mestský úrad) and the Centre for Regional Development Support. The Redoute is listed among the top attractions of Kežmarok alongside other major sites. Located directly on the Main Square (Hlavné námestie), you can easily walk to the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Basilica with its white facade and tall tower on Church Square (Kostolné námestie), which is one of the largest Gothic three-nave churches in the Spiš region. Next to the basilica stands the Renaissance Belfry (Golden Tower) from 1568, decorated originally with gold, whose main bell from 1525 makes it the oldest bell tower in Slovakia. The historic Town Hall with its characteristic tower is also nearby, and in front of it stands the Cage of Embarrassment, used in the past as punishment for criminals.
