Ancient Blast Furnace, Massa Museum

Ancient Blast Furnace at the Massa Museum in Miskolc is one of Hungary’s most striking industrial heritage sites, preserving a rare 19th‑century iron‑smelting structure in its original forested setting. Built in 1813, the furnace once formed the heart of the Ómassa ironworks, supplying tools, machinery parts, and weapons during the early industrial boom. Its towering stone shaft and arched openings remain remarkably intact, offering a vivid sense of the scale and heat of historic iron production. Inside the museum area, visitors can explore the furnace’s interior chambers, where ore, charcoal, and limestone were once fed into the blazing core. Exhibits explain each stage of smelting, supported by original tools, moulds, and casting equipment. One of the most interesting features is the preserved water‑driven bellows system, which once powered the intense airflow needed to keep the furnace burning. Surrounding buildings display models, archival photographs, and examples of iron products made here. The site’s atmospheric woodland location adds to the experience, making the Ancient Blast Furnace a rare and immersive monument to early Hungarian industry.
