The Wooden Church of Miskolc (Fából épült templom) is one of the city’s most atmospheric landmarks, celebrated for its craftsmanship and its unusual history of rebirth. The original 17th‑century wooden church stood for centuries before a devastating fire in 1997 destroyed it completely. What visitors see today is the faithful reconstruction completed in 1999, built using traditional carpentry techniques and echoing the spirit of the lost structure. Inside, the church feels warm and intimate, shaped entirely by carved timber. The wooden ceiling, patterned with geometric motifs, creates a rhythmic visual flow, while the pulpit and benches showcase the precision of local woodworking traditions. The altar, simple yet expressive, reflects the Protestant character of the congregation. Light filtering through the tall windows enhances the natural grain of the wood, giving the interior a serene, almost Nordic atmosphere. The church is also known for its excellent acoustics, making it a popular venue for chamber concerts.

The church is in the Tetemvár area, a quiet hillside district north of the city centre. You can reach it by taking bus number 1 or 1A from Miskolc Bus Station towards Diósgyőr and stopping at Tetemvár Felsősor, then walking about 10 minutes along the street. The area is peaceful, with views over parts of Miskolc and a sense of being slightly outside the main urban rush. From the Wooden Church, you can easily return to the city centre and visit key sights such as the Rooster Church (Downtown Reformed Church) on Kossuth Lajos Street and the historic Church of All Saints. The National Theatre of Miskolc, the main theatre of the city and home to the International Opera Festival, is also a short walk away in the centre. A popular nearby attraction is the Avas district, home to the Avas Lookout Tower, which offers panoramic views over Miskolc and the Bükk Mountains. The Avas Arboretum and historic wine cellars are also worth visiting in this area. Further out, you can explore Diósgyőr Castle, a medieval castle with a museum; the scenic Lillafüred resort with its palace and Szinva waterfall; and the unique Miskolctapolca Cave Bath built in a stalactite cave. The Miskolc Zoo and the Ottó Herman Museum are excellent family-friendly attractions close to the city as well.
