Rooster Church

About

The Rooster Church (Kakas-templom) in Miskolc is a small but characterful Reformed church known for the metal rooster perched on its tower — a traditional Protestant symbol of vigilance and spiritual awakening. Built in the 18th century after the Reformed community regained the right to worship publicly, it stands today as one of the city’s most charming landmarks, blending late Baroque simplicity with local craftsmanship. Inside, the church is intimate and warmly lit, reflecting the modest aesthetic of Hungarian Calvinist tradition. The wooden gallery supported by carved pillars gives the space a distinctive rhythm, while the pulpit with its canopy is the main artistic highlight, decorated with restrained yet elegant motifs. The communion table, crafted from dark wood, anchors the interior with a sense of quiet dignity. Look also for the organ, a later addition that enriches the church’s regular concerts and community gatherings.
