St. Anne Church

About

The St. Anne Church (Szent Anna-templom) in Miskolc is one of the city’s most graceful Baroque landmarks, completed in the mid‑18th century as the main Catholic church of the rapidly growing industrial town. Its twin‑tower façade, crowned with elegant onion domes, became a defining silhouette of central Miskolc and remains a beloved point of orientation for locals. Inside, the church reveals a richly decorated Baroque world. The main altar, dedicated to St. Anne, features a dramatic sculptural group framed by gilded columns and soft pastel colours typical of the period. The side altars honour various saints and display expressive 18th‑century paintings. The vaulted ceiling frescoes add movement and light, illustrating scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Don’t miss the carved wooden pulpit, an excellent example of local craftsmanship, and the historic organ, which gives the church its warm acoustic character during concerts and liturgical celebrations.

Location

The church stands on St. Anna Square, close to Városház Square (Town Hall Square) and the main urban core of Miskolc. It is around 140 metres north of Mindszenty József bíboros tér, a small park in the city. This central location makes it easy to reach on foot from most of the historic sights in the downtown area. Just a short walk away is the National Theatre of Miskolc, which dominates one of the city’s most romantic streets and is a key cultural venue. Nearby squares and parks, including Városház Square, are ideal for starting a walking tour of the historic centre. A short trip from the church leads to the Avas district, home to the Avas Lookout Tower, which offers panoramic views over Miskolc and the Bükk Mountains. The Avas Arboretum and the historic Avas wine cellars are also popular attractions in this area. Further out but still easily accessible are some of Miskolc’s most famous sights: the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, a unique spa built in a stalactite cave; Diósgyőr Castle, a medieval castle with a museum; and the scenic Lillafüred area, including Lillafüred Palace, the Szinva waterfall, and the St. Stephen Stalactite Cave. The Miskolc Zoo and the Ottó Herman Museum are also well-visited sites ideal for families and culture lovers.
