About

The Barcsay Museum in Szentendre honours Jenő Barcsay, one of Hungary’s most influential 20th‑century artists and a master of constructive, geometric composition. Known as the “architect of painting,” Barcsay developed a visual language that blended Cubist structure with a calm, meditative sense of order. The museum, housed in a historic building near the town’s artistic quarter, offers a serene and focused encounter with his work. Inside, visitors can explore Barcsay’s signature geometric paintings, where muted colours and precisely balanced forms create a sense of quiet harmony. His Szentendre‑inspired works are especially striking: the town’s rooftops, stairways, and church towers are distilled into rhythmic, architectural abstractions. The museum also presents his drawings and anatomical studies, reflecting his long career as a respected art teacher and author of the influential Anatomy for the Artist.

Location

The Barcsay Museum (Barcsay Múzeum) is located at Dumtsa Jenő utca 10 in the historic centre of Szentendre, on the Danube Bend just north of Budapest. It sits on a quiet street between the main tourist square (Fő tér) and the Danube promenade, a short walk from the town’s transport links and key art galleries. Just a short walk from the museum is Fő tér (Main Square), the vibrant heart of Szentendre, with rows of colourful painted houses, cafés, souvenir shops, and the ornate Blagovestenska Serbian Orthodox Church (Annunciation Church, built 1752). Attached to the church is the Serbian Ecclesiastical Art Collection, which displays religious icons and sacred objects. Near the main square, you can visit the Marzipan Museum (Szamos Márván Múzeum), featuring elaborate marzipan models of Budapest and Hungary, and descend toward the Danube promenade (Bogdányi út), lined with art galleries, cafés, and small shops. Along this route, you can also see the Ferenczy Museum in the former Ferenczy family home and the Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum in an 18th-century salt house, dedicated to Hungary’s most famous ceramicist. Other nearby attractions include the Czóbel Museum on Church Square, the Kmetty Museum with cubist works, the Ámos-Anna Museum with surrealist paintings, and the Art Mill (MűvészetMalom), a modern art centre with contemporary exhibitions.
