The Church of Saint John the Baptist is one of Szentendre’s oldest landmarks, standing on a hilltop that once formed the centre of the medieval town. First mentioned in the 13th century, it was rebuilt several times after fires and invasions, giving it a distinctive blend of Gothic foundations and later Baroque additions. Its freestanding bell tower, added in the 18th century, became a symbol of the town and still dominates the skyline above the main square. Inside, the church feels intimate and atmospheric. The Baroque main altar, with its sculpted saints and gilded details, draws the eye immediately. Fragments of medieval frescoes survive on the walls, offering a rare glimpse into the church’s earliest artistic layers. The carved wooden pulpit and side altars reflect the craftsmanship of local masters who worked here during the 1700s. One of the most interesting features is the collection of votive objects and memorial plaques that trace the life of Szentendre’s mixed communities over the centuries. The churchyard, with its old stone crosses, adds to the sense of continuity and quiet charm.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist, also called the Castle Church, stands on Castle Hill (Várdomb) at the top of the historic old town in Szentendre, directly on Templom tér (Church Square). It is the oldest building in the city, with its origins dating back to the 13th century, originally built between 1241 and 1283. Just below Castle Hill is Szentendre’s lively Main Square (Fő tér), the town’s tourist heart with baroque buildings, colorful painted houses, cafés, and souvenir shops. On the same square or within a short walk you can find the Béla Czóbel Museum, a small museum dedicated to the painter Béla Czóbel, located right on Church Square. The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and the ornate Blagovestenska Church are also nearby, both part of Szentendre’s strong Serbian heritage and baroque architecture. Art lovers can visit the Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum with sculptural ceramics, and the Szamos Marzipan Museum, which combines marzipan art with a candy shop.
