Szentendre Gallery

About

The Szentendre Gallery is one of the town’s key exhibition spaces, showcasing the artistic richness that has defined Szentendre for nearly a century. Operated by the Ferenczy Museum Center, the gallery occupies a historic building near the main square, where its clean, flexible interior provides an ideal setting for both classic and contemporary art. Inside, visitors can explore rotating exhibitions that highlight the town’s artistic legacy—from early members of the Szentendre Artists’ Colony to today’s experimental creators. The gallery often presents thematic shows that connect painting, sculpture, photography, and multimedia, offering fresh perspectives on Hungarian modernism and the evolving visual culture of the Danube Bend. Because exhibitions change several times a year, the space always feels dynamic and current. One of the gallery’s strengths is its ability to place Szentendre’s artists in a broader context, pairing local masters with national and international voices. Archival materials, sketches, and documentary films frequently accompany the displays, enriching the visitor’s understanding of the town’s creative history.

Location

The Szentendre Gallery is located right on the main square of Szentendre, at Fő tér 2–5, in the heart of the town’s historic Baroque district on the Danube Bend just north of Budapest. It is very easy to reach on foot from the HÉV train or bus station, as well as from the Danube promenade and jetty where boats from Budapest arrive. Right on the same Fő tér (Main Square) are rows of colourful painted houses, cafés, souvenir shops, and the highlight of the square: the ornate Blagovestenska Serbian Orthodox Church (Annunciation Church, built 1752) with fine Baroque and Rococo elements. The square also features the Memorial Cross and many 18th- and 19th-century buildings. A short walk from the gallery leads to the Margit Kovács Ceramic Collection, dedicated to Hungary’s most famous ceramicist, in an 18th-century salt house, and the Ferenczy Museum in the former Ferenczy family home. Descending toward the river, you reach the Danube Promenade (Duna korzó sétálóút), lined with terraced restaurants, cafés, and art galleries, including the Retro Design Center with its quirky collection of Socialist-era objects. Other nearby attractions include the Marzipan Museum with elaborate edible models of Budapest and Hungary, the Serbian Ecclesiastical Art Collection behind Blagovestenska, the Czóbel Museum on Church Square, and the Art Mill (MűvészetMalom), a modern art centre with contemporary exhibitions.
