Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt in Hallstatt is a serene Gothic landmark rising above the village, its slender tower mirrored in the lake below. Built in the 15th century, the church reflects Hallstatt’s prosperity during the salt‑mining era. One of its most intriguing features is the preserved Romanesque portal from an earlier church, a rare architectural survivor that hints at centuries of continuous worship on this site. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and luminous. The star‑ribbed Gothic vaults draw the eye upward, while the high altar—crafted in the late Gothic style—presents a vivid depiction of the Assumption of Mary. The side altars, added in the Baroque period, create a warm contrast with their gilded carvings and expressive figures. Particularly noteworthy is the painted pulpit, decorated with delicate scenes that reward close viewing. A highlight for many visitors is the church’s connection to the nearby ossuary, where artistically painted skulls form one of Hallstatt’s most unusual cultural traditions.
