The Evangelische Pfarrkirche Hallstatt is one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks, its slender neo‑Gothic tower rising above the lakeshore. Built in the 1860s after Protestant worship was legally permitted again in the Habsburg Empire, the church became a symbol of Hallstatt’s renewed religious freedom. Its design reflects the simplicity and clarity valued by 19th‑century Protestant architecture, contrasting with the richly decorated Catholic churches nearby. Inside, the atmosphere is bright and understated. The wooden ceiling and clean white walls create a calm, contemplative space, while the pointed‑arch windows fill the nave with soft natural light. The stained‑glass panels, added later, depict biblical scenes in vivid colours that animate the interior on sunny days. The modest altar, crafted from light wood, emphasises the Protestant focus on scripture and preaching rather than elaborate ornamentation. A small gallery houses the organ, whose warm tone accompanies services and concerts. From the church terrace, visitors enjoy one of Hallstatt’s most iconic views across the lake and mountains.
