Hallstätter See is the natural heart of the Salzkammergut, a deep glacial lake whose dramatic setting has shaped Hallstatt’s history for millennia. Its unusually clear, cold waters reach depths of more than 120 metres, fed by mountain streams that keep the lake pristine. For centuries, it served as the main transport route for Hallstatt’s salt, with flat wooden boats—Plätten—carrying the “white gold” across the water long before roads existed. The lake’s beauty changes with the light: misty mornings create a soft, ethereal atmosphere, while evenings reflect the surrounding peaks like a mirror. Swans, grebes, and trout thrive here, making the lake an important habitat within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Visitors can explore the shoreline paths, take a quiet boat ride, or simply enjoy the iconic view of Hallstatt rising from the water’s edge. In summer, small bathing spots offer refreshing access to the lake, while winter brings a stillness that transforms the entire valley into a natural amphitheatre of silence.
Hallstatt Austria
Hallstätter See, also called Lake Hallstatt, is a glacial lake in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, located at the southwestern shore of Lake Hallstatt and on the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, in the UNESCO World Heritage Region of Hallstatt–Dachstein–Salzkammergut. The lake is 5.9 kilometers long and lies north of the Dachstein mountain range, with the village of Hallstatt on its western shore. Near the lake, you can visit Hallstatt’s top attractions. Just a short walk from the market square is the famous photo point (Panoramic Viewpoint), one of the world’s most beautiful and most photographed motifs in Europe. The Hallstatt Salt Mine (Salzwelten Hallstatt), the oldest salt mine in the world, is located high above Hallstatt on Salzberg (Salt Mountain), accessible via the funicular, and offers guided tours through historic tunnels. The World Heritage Museum (Weltmuseum) focuses on the region’s Iron Age/Celtic settlement and salt mining history, with 26 stations of multimedia exhibits. The Hallstatt Bone House (Beinhaus) contains rows of neatly stacked skulls painted with decorative designs and the names of their former owners, located in the historic town center at one of the most beautiful vantage points in Hallstatt.
