Heiligenkreuz Kirche

Heiligenkreuzkirche is one of Villach’s most intriguing small churches, standing just outside the historic centre near the old river crossings. Its origins reach back to the 14th century, when it served a growing suburb of craftsmen and traders. The church takes its name from the “Holy Cross,” a relic once venerated here, which made it a modest local pilgrimage site. Repeated floods from the Drau shaped its history, prompting several reconstructions that left a blend of Gothic and later Baroque elements. Inside, the single‑nave space feels intimate and bright. The Baroque high altar, with its expressive crucifixion scene, is the church’s emotional centre. Look for the preserved Gothic chancel arch and the delicate stucco work added during an 18th‑century renovation. The side altars, dedicated to Mary and St. Joseph, show the craftsmanship of local Villach workshops. A small but charming detail is the wooden gallery, whose simple carving reflects the church’s community‑oriented past.
