Stadthauptpfarrkirche St. Jakob

St. Jakob is Villach’s principal parish church and one of Carinthia’s most recognisable landmarks, thanks to its soaring 94‑metre tower — the tallest church tower in the region. The site has served as Villach’s spiritual centre since the 12th century, though the present Gothic structure took shape in the 14th and 15th centuries after several fires reshaped the town. Its elegant exterior, with pointed arches and a slender spire, reflects Villach’s medieval prosperity as a crossroads of Alpine trade routes. Inside, the church reveals a surprisingly warm and harmonious space. The rib‑vaulted nave leads the eye toward the high altar, a richly carved Baroque masterpiece depicting St. James the Greater. Look for the late‑Gothic stone pulpit, decorated with delicate tracery, and the colourful stained‑glass windows that illuminate the interior with soft, shifting light. One of the most interesting features is the elevated gallery, offering a rare vantage point over the nave. Visitors can also climb the tower during the summer months, rewarded with panoramic views over Villach, the Drau River, and the surrounding mountains — a highlight that connects the church’s spiritual role with the landscape it has watched over for centuries.
