Sanctuary of Maria Gail

The Sanctuary of Maria Gail is one of Carinthia’s most cherished pilgrimage churches, set on a gentle rise overlooking the confluence of the Gail and Drau rivers. Its origins reach back to the 12th century, but the church gained prominence in the late Middle Ages when a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary attracted pilgrims from across the region. The current structure blends Gothic foundations with later Baroque additions, creating a harmonious and quietly elegant silhouette. Inside, the sanctuary reveals its true richness. The high altar, a luminous Baroque composition, frames the revered statue of Our Lady of Gail, long believed to offer protection to travellers and families. The Gothic rib‑vaulted chancel preserves medieval fresco fragments, while the side altars display expressive 17th‑century carvings typical of southern Austria. One of the most interesting features is the painted wooden ceiling in the nave, whose soft colours and folk‑inspired motifs give the interior a warm, intimate character.
