Set partly underground, the museum recreates the alpine village as it was in the 19th century and tells the story of Zermatt’s transformation from a farming village to a world-famous mountaineering destination. The main focus is the dramatic first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Edward Whymper’s party, along with the tragic events that followed.
