ZOOOM the Matterhorn @ Gornergrat is one of Zermatt’s most engaging modern attractions, a multimedia experience that reveals the mountain’s secrets from inside a sleek, contemporary exhibition space. Set at 3,100 metres on the Gornergrat ridge, it combines high‑altitude drama with immersive storytelling, making it a perfect complement to the panoramic views outside. Inside, the highlight is the Matterhorn immersion room, where large‑scale projections and soundscapes recreate storms, dawn light, and historic climbs. Visitors can explore interactive stations that explain the mountain’s geology, the formation of glaciers, and the challenges faced by early alpinists. The exhibition also includes original mountaineering equipment, showing how climbers once confronted the peak with tools that seem astonishingly simple today. One of the most interesting facts is the focus on local wildlife and ecosystems. ZOOOM uses digital installations to introduce ibex, marmots, and high‑alpine birds, revealing how they survive in extreme conditions. A 3D telescope lets you “zoom” across the landscape, spotting glaciers, ridges, and distant summits with remarkable clarity.
Zermatt Switzerland
ZOOOM the Matterhorn is an immersive multimedia experience located at the Gornergrat summit station, above Zermatt in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Perched at over 3,000 meters, it sits inside the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat complex, which you reach by taking the Gornergrat Railway cogwheel train from Zermatt village. The train ride itself is a highlight, climbing past forests, alpine meadows, and glaciers with views of the Matterhorn getting closer at every turn. ZOOOM uses three themed zones to bring the Matterhorn to life. In the first area, 3D cinema projections let you virtually fly around the iconic peak and through the alpine landscape. The second zone features oversized telescopes with augmented reality that identify surrounding mountains, glaciers, and villages in real time. The third area is a chill-out lounge with a glass floor and Matterhorn views, plus light and sound installations that reflect the mountain’s changing moods. Nearby, the Gornergrat observation platform is one of the best panoramic spots in the Alps, with a 360° view of 29 peaks over 4,000 meters, including Monte Rosa and the Gorner Glacier. Also at the summit are the Kulmhotel restaurant, a high-altitude shop, and photo points. From Gornergrat you can hike down to Riffelberg or Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn reflects perfectly in the lake on calm days.
