Alba Carolina Citadel is one of Europe’s largest Vauban‑style fortresses, a star‑shaped stronghold built in the early 18th century to secure Habsburg control over Transylvania. Alba Carolina Citadel is located in the center of Alba Iulia, in Alba County, central Romania. Built between 1715 and 1738 on the site of earlier Roman and medieval fortifications, it is the largest Vauban-style star fortress in Romania. Inside the citadel you can visit The National Museum of the Union and The Union Hall, where the 1918 assembly took place. Right nearby are the Coronation Cathedral, built for King Ferdinand and Queen Marie in 1922, and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael, a 13th-century Romanesque gem. The Princely Palace, the Roman castrum ruins of ancient Apulum, and the Apor Palace add more layers of history. The citadel comes alive with the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony, Roman reenactments, and evening light shows projected on the gates. Beyond the walls, Liberty Street offers cafés, restaurants, and 19th-century architecture. Mamut Park provides green space for walks. From Alba Iulia you can take easy day trips to the Trascău Mountains, Râmeț Monastery, or the medieval town of Sebeș.
