Saint Michael’s Cathedral in Alba Iulia is one of the most remarkable medieval churches in Romania, a rare example of pure Romanesque architecture blended with later Gothic additions. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it has witnessed coronations, princely ceremonies, and centuries of political and religious change. Its tall, sober façade and massive bell tower give it a commanding presence inside the Alba Carolina Citadel. Inside, the nave reveals stone columns and pointed arches that create a solemn, monastic atmosphere. The crypt is one of the cathedral’s most fascinating spaces, holding the tombs of Transylvanian rulers such as John I and Queen Isabella. Their carved sarcophagi make this one of the most historically charged interiors in the region. The main altar combines Gothic structure with Baroque decoration, reflecting the cathedral’s long evolution. Visitors also admire the rose window, a delicate medieval feature that fills the interior with soft coloured light. The choir stalls, carved with intricate motifs, showcase exceptional craftsmanship.

Saint Michael Cathedral, also called the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Alba Iulia, is located inside the Alba Carolina Citadel in the center of Alba Iulia, Alba County, central Romania. It is the oldest and longest cathedral in the country, with construction beginning in the 11th century and continuing in Romanesque and Gothic styles. The cathedral stands in the heart of the star-shaped Alba Carolina Citadel, one of the largest Vauban fortresses in Europe. Just steps away is the Coronation Cathedral, built in 1922 for King Ferdinand and Queen Marie. Nearby you will also find The National Museum of the Union in the Babylon Building and The Union Hall, where the Great Union of Transylvania with Romania was proclaimed in 1918. Walking through the citadel you can explore the gates, bastions, and moats, watch the daily Changing of the Guard, and see the Roman castrum ruins of Apulum. The Princely Palace and the Route of the Three Fortifications are also within the walls. Outside the citadel, Liberty Street offers cafés and 19th-century architecture, while Mamut Park provides green space for walks. With its age, architecture, and central location, Saint Michael Cathedral is a key landmark for understanding Alba Iulia’s religious and historical heritage.
