Castle of Stara Loka is one of the oldest manorial residences in the Škofja Loka area, with roots reaching back to the 13th century. The Castle of Stara Loka is located in Stara Loka, the oldest part of Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s most charming medieval towns. Set on the left bank of the Selca Sora River, the castle dates back to the 13th century and was once the administrative seat of the Loka dominion. Though much of the original structure was rebuilt after earthquakes, its manor-house appearance, corner tower, and surrounding park still reflect its historic importance. Just across the river, a short walk over the stone bridge leads you into the medieval old town of Škofja Loka. The main square, Mestni trg, is lined with colorful 16th-century burgher houses, small shops, and cafes that capture the town’s artisan spirit. Towering above the town is Loka Castle, which houses the Škofja Loka Museum with exhibits on local history, archaeology, and the famous Škofja Loka Passion Play. Nearby you’ll also find the Capuchin Bridge, one of the oldest preserved stone bridges in central Europe, and the Church of St. Jacob with its baroque interior. A few minutes away is the Škopar House Open-Air Museum, a 16th-century farmhouse showing traditional rural life. The surrounding Škofja Loka Hills offer easy hiking trails and views over the Sora Valley.
