Parish Church of St. James is one of Škofja Loka’s defining landmarks, standing at the edge of the old town with a history reaching back to the 13th century. Dedicated to St. James the Apostle, patron of pilgrims, it once marked an important stop on regional pilgrimage routes. A particularly interesting fact is that the church’s Gothic presbytery is among the finest in Upper Carniola, distinguished by its ribbed vaults and elegant proportions that survived several earthquakes. Inside, the church reveals a rich blend of Gothic structure and later Baroque decoration. The main altar, created in the 17th century, features a striking statue of St. James with his pilgrim’s staff and scallop shell. The side altars display paintings by notable Slovenian artists, including works that depict local saints and legends tied to Škofja Loka’s medieval past. Visitors can also admire the beautifully carved choir stalls and the organ loft, home to an instrument known for its warm, resonant tone during concerts. One of the most atmospheric elements is the collection of frescoes and painted details that appear in quieter corners of the church, offering glimpses into centuries of devotion.

The Parish Church of St. James stands in the historic old town of Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s most beautifully preserved medieval towns. Located on the edge of the main square, Mestni trg, the church is hard to miss with its tall bell tower rising above the colorful burgher houses. Originally built in the 15th century and later remodeled in baroque style, St. James Church has long been the spiritual center of the town. Right outside the church is Mestni trg, the lively heart of Škofja Loka. The square is lined with historic townhouses, small shops, and cafes, making it perfect for a stroll after visiting the church. Just uphill from the square towers Loka Castle, home to the Škofja Loka Museum. The castle offers exhibitions on the town’s history, archaeology, and ethnology, plus panoramic views over the old town and the surrounding hills. A few minutes’ walk brings you to the Capuchin Bridge, a 14th-century stone bridge across the Selca Sora River and one of the oldest preserved bridges in central Europe. Also nearby is the Škopar House Open-Air Museum, an authentic 16th-century farmhouse that shows traditional rural life in the region.
