Slovenj Gradec’s Grad is a compact medieval castle that reveals how a small Carinthian town became an unexpected cultural crossroads. The fortress dates to the 12th century, once guarding trade routes that linked Styria with the Drava Valley. Its later owners, the influential Counts of Andechs, expanded it into a residence that shaped the town’s early urban form. Inside, the castle houses the Koroška Regional Museum, where you can explore archaeological finds, traditional Carinthian crafts, and stories of local life shaped by borderland history. One of the most engaging exhibits is the collection of medieval artefacts discovered during restoration works, offering a glimpse into everyday objects used by the castle’s earliest inhabitants. Grad Slovenj Gradec, also called the Slovenj Gradec Castle, stands above the town of Slovenj Gradec in northern Slovenia’s Carinthia region. It’s set on a wooded slope overlooking the Mislinja Valley, with the Pohorje hills to the east and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps visible in the distance. Just below the castle is the town’s well-preserved medieval core. Walk the cobbled streets to the Gothic Church of St. Elizabeth from 1251 and the Church of the Holy Spirit built in 1428. The birth house of composer Hugo Wolf now serves as a memorial museum, while the Carinthian Gallery of Fine Arts and the Carinthian Regional Museum display regional art and history. For something different, visit the Jožef Levovnik Shoemaking Museum. Close by are the Vodriž Castle ruins for a short hike, and the scenic Gorge Kaštel along the Suhodolnica river. Mount St. Ursula offers panoramic views over Carinthia, and families enjoy Alpakaland or the Motor Skills Park on the Štrekna cycle path. A short drive away are Velenje Castle with its Coal Mining Museum, Lake Ivarčko, and the Šalek Castle ruins.
