Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God

About

Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God is one of Tuzla’s most serene landmarks, a 19th‑century Serbian Orthodox church that blends traditional Balkan architecture with elegant neo‑Byzantine details. Its soft stone façade and tall bell tower make it a visual anchor of the old town, while its history reflects Tuzla’s diverse religious landscape. Inside, the cathedral is warm and atmospheric. The iconostasis is its most striking feature: a richly carved wooden screen filled with gilded icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and major saints. Many were painted by regional masters, giving the interior a distinct artistic identity. The frescoes, added during later restorations, follow classical Orthodox style—deep colours, elongated figures, and scenes arranged to guide visitors through the liturgical story. One of the most interesting details is the cathedral’s acoustics. Its high vaults and thick walls create a resonant sound during liturgy, making choral performances especially moving. You can also see preserved liturgical books and silver ritual objects displayed in a small side area, offering insight into the craftsmanship of the period.
