Today, the main barracks and surrounding grounds serve as a moving museum, preserving the memory of the thousands who were imprisoned here and the historic prisoner escape that took place in 1942. The museum is located near the city's main railway station, placing it within easy reach of several key historic landmarks and cultural attractions. Just a short trip south toward the Nišava River brings you to the Niš Fortress, a massive 18th-century Ottoman castle complex containing old hamams, historic powder magazines, stone gates, and expansive park grounds. Crossing the river leads straight into King Milan Square, the vibrant center of Niš, and the historic cobblestones of Tinkers Alley with its Ottoman-era architecture. Other notable historical sites managed under the city's museum network include the Archaeological Hall on Nikola Pašić Street, which displays remarkable ancient Roman statues.
