Niš Fortress is one of the Balkans’ best‑preserved Ottoman fortifications, a vast stone stronghold built in the early 18th century on the site of earlier Roman and medieval defenses. Its massive walls, still intact, reveal how the Ottomans combined military engineering with elegant architectural details. Walking through the Stambol Gate, the fortress’s grand entrance, feels like stepping into a layered timeline of Niš itself. Inside, visitors can explore the remains of the Roman military camp, including foundations that hint at the city’s strategic importance along ancient routes. The Ottoman arsenal building, now used for cultural events, showcases thick stone vaults designed to withstand explosions. Nearby stands the old Hammam, a rare example of Ottoman bath culture in Serbia, with preserved domes and warm‑room chambers. One of the most atmospheric corners is the Lapidarium, where Roman sarcophagi and carved stelae are displayed outdoors, surrounded by greenery. The fortress also contains the Bali‑beg Mosque, partially restored, offering insight into the religious life of the Ottoman garrison. During summer, the interior becomes a lively cultural hub, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and performances that animate its historic courtyards.
