National Museum Niš is one of Serbia’s oldest cultural institutions, offering a deep, layered journey through the history of Niš and its surrounding region. Founded in 1933, it holds more than 40,000 artefacts, making it one of the country’s richest collections. An interesting fact is that Niš—birthplace of Constantine the Great—has been continuously inhabited for millennia, and the museum reflects this extraordinary timeline. Inside, the archaeological section showcases Roman heritage, including mosaics, pottery, jewellery, and items linked to the imperial residence at Mediana. Displays from prehistory and antiquity reveal how early communities lived along the Nišava River. The medieval collection features Byzantine and Serbian artefacts such as crosses, armour, and decorative metalwork. The ethnographic department presents traditional clothing, household objects, and tools that illustrate rural life in southern Serbia. A modern‑history section documents Niš’s role in trade, industry, and resistance movements, with photographs and personal items from the 19th and 20th centuries.
