Eparhija Niška

The seat of the Orthodox Diocese of Niš is one of the city’s most meaningful religious landmarks, blending spiritual heritage with quiet architectural elegance. Although primarily an administrative and ecclesiastical center, it offers visitors a chance to explore the deep roots of Christianity in one of Serbia’s oldest dioceses—tradition here stretches back to Late Antiquity, when Niš was a major Roman crossroads. Inside the diocesan complex, the most engaging feature is the treasury, where liturgical objects from local churches are preserved. These include finely worked silver crosses, embroidered vestments, and chalices crafted by Niš goldsmiths who often hid symbolic motifs in their designs. The collection of icons is especially compelling: works from the 17th to 19th centuries show how regional painters blended Byzantine forms with emerging European influences, creating a distinctive southern‑Serbian style.
