Sofia Puppet Theatre
About

Founded in 1946, the Sofia Puppet Theatre is Bulgaria’s oldest professional puppet theatre and a cherished cultural institution dedicated to the art of puppetry. Originally established by actress Mara Penkova and her colleagues, the theatre quickly gained national recognition and became a state-supported venue. Today, it operates under the Sofia Municipality and maintains a permanent ensemble, technical staff, and two stages—on Gurko Street and Yanko Sakazov Street. Its repertoire spans over 20 productions annually, ranging from classical fairy tales to contemporary works, performed more than 650 times a year for over 65,000 spectators. The theatre explores diverse styles, including shadow theatre, pantomime, musical storytelling, and satire, appealing to both children and adults. It also houses workshops for puppet and set design, as well as a sound recording studio. With numerous national and international awards, the Sofia Puppet Theatre continues to inspire generations through its imaginative performances, artistic excellence, and enduring commitment to theatrical innovation.
