Sarafkina House Museum

Sarafkina House is one of Veliko Tarnovo’s most atmospheric Revival‑era homes, perched above the winding streets of the old town. Built in 1861 for a wealthy merchant family, it reflects the elegant urban lifestyle of Tarnovo’s rising bourgeoisie. Its façade is instantly recognizable: a bold overhanging upper floor supported by wooden brackets, a hallmark of 19th‑century Bulgarian architecture. Inside, the house unfolds like a time capsule. The merchant’s salon is the highlight, decorated with carved ceilings, delicate wall ornaments, and traditional low seating that once hosted important guests. The women’s quarters display embroidered textiles, jewelry boxes, and household items that reveal the rhythms of domestic life. A small kitchen exhibit shows copper vessels, wooden utensils, and the layout typical of Tarnovo homes before industrialization. One of the most interesting features is the hidden storage room, used by merchants to protect valuables and documents. The house also presents a fine collection of Revival‑era crafts, including weaving, woodcarving, and metalwork. From the upper windows, visitors enjoy a charming view of the old town’s rooftops cascading toward the Yantra River.
