Tsarevets Fortress

About

Tsarevets Fortress is the dramatic heart of medieval Veliko Tarnovo, rising above the Yantra River on a naturally fortified hill. Between the 12th and 14th centuries it served as the seat of the Second Bulgarian Empire, a political and spiritual centre whose scale becomes clear the moment you pass through its stone gates. Inside, the most striking feature is the Royal Palace complex, once a sprawling residence with throne halls, courtyards and defensive towers. Nearby stands the Patriarchal Cathedral, rebuilt in the 20th century and decorated with modernist murals that reinterpret Bulgaria’s medieval past in bold, symbolic scenes. One of Tsarevets’ most intriguing spots is Execution Rock, a cliff where traitors were said to be cast into the river—an enduring legend that adds a touch of mystery. The Baldwin’s Tower, named after the captured Latin emperor, offers panoramic views over the city and the surrounding hills. Walking the fortress paths reveals foundations of noble houses, craft workshops and defensive walls that once formed a bustling royal city. At night, Tsarevets transforms through its famous Sound and Light show, turning the hill into a glowing historical stage.
