Trapezitsa Fortress

Trapezitsa Fortress is the quieter, more introspective counterpart to Tsarevets—yet historically just as important. Rising above the Yantra River, it was a major residential and spiritual centre of the Second Bulgarian Empire, home to nobles, clergy and some of the era’s finest church architecture. Excavations over the past decades have revealed a remarkably dense network of medieval buildings. The most impressive sights are the restored churches scattered across the hill. Their foundations, fresco fragments and stone decoration show how Trapezitsa once formed a sacred district overlooking the royal capital. The noble residences uncovered nearby reveal everyday life—storage rooms, ovens and defensive walls that belonged to Tarnovo’s elite families. A highlight is the interactive exhibition at the entrance, where models and multimedia displays explain the fortress’s layout and its role in medieval urban planning. Walking the paths, you’ll also see the fortification system: towers, ramparts and gates that once guarded the northern approach to the capital. Trapezitsa offers superb views of Tsarevets and the old town, making it ideal for photography and quiet exploration.
