Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension

The Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension crowns the summit of Tsarevets Hill, standing where the spiritual heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire once beat. Though the current structure is a 20th‑century reconstruction, it occupies the exact footprint of the medieval patriarchal church, giving visitors a rare sense of continuity between past and present. Inside, the most striking element is its modernist mural cycle. Instead of traditional iconography, the walls are covered with dramatic, symbolic scenes created in the 1980s by artist Teofan Sokerov. His style blends medieval themes with bold contemporary forms, turning the cathedral into a visual narrative of Bulgarian history—from the rise of Tarnovgrad to its fall under Ottoman rule. The central dome offers a powerful focal point, illuminated to highlight the abstract depiction of the Ascension. Around it, the side chapels present episodes from the lives of tsars, patriarchs and saints, rendered with sharp lines and deep colors that feel almost cinematic. Outside, the cathedral’s tower provides one of the finest viewpoints in Veliko Tarnovo, overlooking the Yantra River and the layered rooftops of the old town.
