Dobri Voynikov House Museum

Dobri Voynikov House Museum in Shumen celebrates one of Bulgaria’s earliest playwrights and cultural modernisers, offering a vivid glimpse into the world that shaped his pioneering work. The house, a classic National Revival residence with wooden beams and a quiet inner courtyard, preserves the atmosphere of mid‑19th‑century Shumen—a city then buzzing with schools, theatre circles and patriotic societies. Voynikov lived here during the formative years when he wrote some of the first Bulgarian plays and helped organise community theatre long before liberation. Inside, the museum’s most engaging room is the study, where manuscripts, school materials and personal letters reveal Voynikov’s dual life as both educator and dramatist. A rare highlight is the original script of Princess Rayna, one of the earliest Bulgarian stage works, displayed alongside period costumes used in later performances. The exhibition also includes his teaching aids, showing how he introduced modern subjects and methods into Bulgarian education. The salon recreates the intimate theatrical gatherings that Voynikov helped popularise, with portraits of actors, early theatre posters and a small collection of handmade props.
