Shumen Fortress

Shumen Fortress is one of Bulgaria’s most atmospheric archaeological sites, a place where more than two millennia of history unfold across a dramatic hilltop. The fortress was used by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians, each leaving layers of architecture that make the site feel like a living timeline. Its strategic position overlooking the Shumen Plateau explains why it remained an important stronghold until the late Middle Ages. Inside the walls, visitors can explore the remains of residential quarters, workshops and defensive towers. One of the most interesting features is the early Christian basilica, whose foundations reveal the spread of Christianity in the region during the 5th century. Nearby, the medieval gate complex shows how the fortress was expanded during the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, with massive stone blocks and cleverly angled entrances designed to slow attackers. The citadel area offers the best views and the strongest sense of medieval life. Archaeologists have uncovered pottery, weapons and jewellery here, many of which are displayed in the Regional History Museum. Walking through the ruins, you can still trace the outlines of streets and courtyards, giving a vivid impression of how the fortress functioned as a bustling fortified town.
