About

The Museum of Roses in Kazanlak is a fragrant tribute to Bulgaria’s most emblematic blossom, celebrating over three centuries of rose‑oil production in the Valley of the Roses. Opened in 1967, it remains the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to the oil‑bearing rose. Its collection reveals how Kazanlak became a global centre for attar of roses, once traded as a luxury commodity across Europe and the Middle East. Inside, visitors can explore authentic distillation equipment, from early copper alembics to modern steam‑distillation systems. The museum displays rare vials of rose oil—some more than a century old—alongside tools used by rose pickers, traditional costumes, and archival photographs showing how entire families took part in the harvest at dawn. One of the most intriguing exhibits is a recreated 19th‑century rose‑distillery room, offering a close look at the meticulous process behind producing just a few grams of precious oil.

Location

You will find it at Voynishka Street 1, Rosarium Park, 6100 Kazanlak, Bulgaria. It sits inside Park Rosarium, about 500 meters north of Sevtopolis Square in the central part of town. The new modern building opened in 2016 and is dedicated to the 300-year-old tradition of rose oil production that made the Valley of Roses famous all over the world. Inside you can see old stills, photos and tools used for picking and distilling roses. Its park location is perfect for a walk to other sights. Right next to it in the same park area is the Thracian Tomb replica and the Kulata Ethnographic Complex, with old houses showing how people lived here in the past. A few minutes south on foot you reach the Historical Museum Iskra at P. R. Slaveykov 8, one of the oldest museums in Bulgaria with rich Thracian and Revival collections, plus the Museum of Photography and Contemporary Visual Arts and the library Iskra. Also nearby is the house-museum of composer Petko Staynov, the central square with cafes, and the Tyulbeto Park hill with a nice view over the town. If you have more time, the original Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO site, and the Shipka Memorial are just a short drive outside the town, but everything in the center itself is within easy walking distance from the Rose Museum.
