Saint Michael Archangel Church

About

Saint Michael Archangel Church is one of the most elegant landmarks in Herceg Novi, standing at the heart of Belavista Square. Built in 1911, it blends Byzantine and Romanesque elements into a compact, harmonious structure of pale stone. Its position—framed by old houses, palm trees, and the sea breeze—makes it one of the town’s most photographed sites. Inside, the church feels intimate and luminous. The central dome filters soft light onto the marble iconostasis, the highlight of the interior. Carved with fine detail, it features icons painted in the traditional Orthodox style, including a striking depiction of Archangel Michael as protector and warrior. The side walls hold additional icons donated by local families, each carrying its own story of devotion. One of the most interesting details is the church’s floor mosaic, inspired by early Christian patterns found along the Adriatic coast. Visitors also notice the acoustics: even a whisper seems to carry, making the space ideal for small liturgical choirs.
