Bulgakov Museum

The Bulgakov Museum in Herceg Novi is a small but atmospheric tribute to Mikhail Bulgakov, the celebrated author of The Master and Margarita. Although Bulgakov never lived in the town, the museum was created by admirers who wanted to highlight his connection to the Adriatic world of exile, imagination, and wandering intellectuals. Set inside a traditional stone house in the Old Town, it feels more like a literary salon than a conventional museum. Inside, the most engaging feature is the recreated writer’s room, arranged to evoke the mood of Bulgakov’s Kyiv and Moscow interiors. A vintage desk, ink set, and period lamp form the symbolic heart of the space, surrounded by shelves of his works in multiple languages. Visitors often linger over the wall of rare photographs, which trace his theatrical career and friendships with actors and directors. Another highlight is the thematic exhibition dedicated to The Master and Margarita. Manuscript facsimiles, character sketches, and stage posters show how the novel inspired generations of artists. A small corner explores the novel’s surreal geography, linking Bulgakov’s imagined Moscow with the Mediterranean landscapes he admired.
