Savina Monastery

Savina Monastery is one of the most serene and historically rich sites in Herceg Novi, set among cypress trees overlooking the Adriatic. This Orthodox complex dates back to the 11th century, though most of its present architecture was shaped in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its three churches, each built in a different period, form a rare architectural timeline of coastal monastic life. The Small Church of the Assumption is the oldest, known for its simple stone interior and fragments of medieval frescoes. Nearby stands the Large Church of the Assumption, the monastery’s centerpiece. Inside, visitors find a magnificent Baroque iconostasis carved by the famed Dimitrijević family, with gilded details and icons that glow in the filtered light. The church also preserves valuable liturgical books and relics linked to the Serbian Orthodox tradition. One of the most interesting features is the treasury, where you can see rare manuscripts, silver crosses, and ceremonial vestments brought from Hilandar Monastery. These objects reveal Savina’s long role as a refuge for monks during turbulent centuries.
