Roman Mosaics in Risan offer one of Montenegro’s most evocative glimpses into everyday life in a Roman villa. The site belonged to a wealthy noble family in the 2nd century AD, and its most famous feature is the mosaic of Hypnos, the god of sleep—remarkable because it is the only known depiction of Hypnos in mosaic form anywhere in the Roman world. This rarity makes Risan an essential stop for anyone interested in classical art. Inside the archaeological building, visitors walk along raised platforms that reveal geometric floors, floral motifs, and intricate black‑and‑white patterns typical of early Roman provincial style. The mosaics were crafted from thousands of tiny limestone and terracotta tesserae, arranged with impressive precision. Informational panels explain how the villa was heated, how rooms were used, and why certain symbols—like vines and waves—were chosen to decorate domestic spaces. You can also see fragments of pottery, coins, and household objects found during excavations, offering a fuller picture of life in ancient Rhizon, once an Illyrian capital before becoming a Roman settlement.

Risan Montenegro

Location

They are located at Kovacevina bb, 85337 Risan, Montenegro, right in the center of the small town of Risan, in the inner part of the Bay of Kotor. You will find them just off the main coastal road, a small museum house covering the remains of an old Roman villa. Easy to spot, there is a sign right on the road. These mosaics are from the 2nd century AD and were part of a luxurious Roman villa that was discovered back in 1930. The floors are incredibly well preserved, especially the famous mosaic of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep. It is the only mosaic of its kind in the Balkans, which makes it pretty special. Risan itself is the oldest settlement in Boka Kotorska, so the whole area has history. Very close you have the remains of the Roman villa with other mosaics and the old Illyrian settlement. A few minutes away is the Church of St. Peter and Paul and the Banja Monastery. If you drive a bit further along the bay you are quickly in Kotor Old Town, which is a UNESCO site with its fortress, city walls, Maritime Museum and St. Tryphon Cathedral. On the other side toward Perast you have the beautiful palaces of Perast and the two famous islands, Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George.
