Illyrian Fort Rizon
Illyrian Fort Rizon above Risan is one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in Montenegro, offering a rare window into the power of the Illyrian kingdom that once ruled the Bay of Kotor. Perched on a rocky hill, the fort belonged to the ancient city of Rhizon, the capital of Queen Teuta, whose fleet famously challenged Roman dominance in the Adriatic. This connection makes the site historically significant: the stones you see today once formed part of an Illyrian stronghold resisting one of the world’s greatest empires. Inside the ruins, visitors walk among low defensive walls, terraces, and foundations that outline the original fortification. Though the structures are fragmentary, their layout reveals how the Illyrians used natural cliffs for protection, creating a strategic vantage point over the bay. Informational panels explain the fort’s role in controlling trade routes and monitoring maritime movement. Scattered pottery fragments, carved stones, and remnants of storage areas hint at daily life within the fortress.
Risan Montenegro
It is located on Gradina Hill, just above Risan, address Risan bb, 85337 Risan, Montenegro. The fort is also marked as Illyrian Fort Rizon or Gradina Fortress. You get to it by a short but steep hike from the center of Risan, following the trails that go up from the Carine archaeological site. The position was perfect for controlling the old route toward Niksic, and today it gives you a full panorama of the Bay of Kotor. This is the remains of Rhizon, the ancient capital of Illyrian Queen Teuta, from the 4th century BC, with later medieval and Ottoman layers on top. It is not a fancy restored castle, it is a real archaeological site with walls and ruins you can explore freely. Right below the hill you have the Carine Archaeological Site and the famous Roman Mosaics at Kovacevina bb, a Roman villa from the 2nd century with beautifully preserved mosaic floors including the Hypnos mosaic. In the town center, inside Risan Park, there is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul from 1796. A few minutes drive away is Banja Monastery right on the shore at Risan bb, a peaceful Orthodox monastery. And if you keep driving along the bay you get to Perast with its baroque palaces like the Bujovic Palace Museum and the islands Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George, and then Kotor Old Town with its fortress, Maritime Museum and St. Tryphon Cathedral.
