Fort Povrsnica
Fort Povrsnica above Risan is a lesser‑known but fascinating remnant of Montenegro’s Austro‑Hungarian military network. Built in the late 19th century, it formed part of a defensive chain designed to control the Bay of Kotor, then one of the empire’s most strategic naval zones. Its most interesting feature is how seamlessly the fort blends into the rocky hillside: engineers carved platforms directly into the terrain, creating a structure that feels half‑built, half‑sculpted from the mountain itself. Inside the ruins, visitors can explore thick stone walls, ammunition rooms, and narrow corridors that once housed soldiers and stored artillery. The fort’s layout reveals its purpose—long firing positions aimed toward the bay, observation points facing inland, and sheltered passages connecting different levels. Though the roof has collapsed in places, the remaining masonry shows the precision typical of Austro‑Hungarian military architecture. Scattered metal fragments, rusted fittings, and carved initials left by soldiers add a human touch to the otherwise stark environment.
Risan Montenegro
It is located on the hills above Risan, address Risan bb, 85337 Risan, Municipality of Kotor, Montenegro. You will find it on the mountain slopes above the town, near the old Risan to Crkvice road. It was built by the Austro-Hungarians at the end of the 19th century after the uprising of 1869 to control the roads and to help defend the nearby Fort Greben. Today you get there by a hiking trail from Risan, it is a bit of a climb but totally worth it for the panorama over the whole Bay of Kotor. It is not a fancy restored palace, it is a real old fortification with thick walls, ruins and that wild abandoned atmosphere that photographers love. Right in the town center you have the famous Roman Mosaics at Kovacevina bb, a Roman villa from the 2nd century with beautifully preserved mosaics, including the Hypnos mosaic. Inside Risan Park there is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul from 1796, a nice Orthodox church in a green park. On the shore you will find Banja Monastery at Risan bb, a peaceful monastery right on the water, and above the town you have the much older Illyrian Fort Rizon on Gradina Hill, the ancient acropolis of Queen Teuta. If you continue along the bay you quickly reach Perast with its baroque palaces like Bujovic Palace Museum and the islands Our Lady of the Rocks.
