Church of Saints Peter and Paul Risan

Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Risan is a quiet landmark with deep roots in the Bay of Kotor’s religious history. Built in the early 17th century, it stands on a site long associated with Christian worship, and one interesting fact is its connection to the nearby Roman villa: archaeologists discovered that early believers gathered in this area centuries before the church itself was constructed. The building’s simple stone façade reflects the modest architectural style typical of coastal parish churches. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and intimate. The iconostasis features finely painted icons of Saints Peter and Paul, whose contrasting roles—Peter the steadfast leader, Paul the travelling teacher—symbolise the spiritual journey of the region. Soft light filters through small windows, illuminating frescoes added over different periods, each layer revealing how local artists interpreted biblical themes.
