The National Iconographic Museum Onufri is located inside Berat Castle, housed in the Church of the Dormition of St Mary in the old Kala quarter of Berat. You’ll find it after walking up through the castle’s cobbled lanes to one of the highest points within the fortress walls. Once you’re inside the castle everything else is close by on foot. The surrounding Kala neighbourhood is still lived in and dotted with small Byzantine churches and quiet courtyards. Just outside the main castle gate the steep streets of Mangalem quarter begin, full of the white Ottoman houses that give Berat its nickname as the city of a thousand windows. Across the river is the Gorica quarter, reached by the old stone Gorica Bridge, another classic spot for views. Down in the lower town you can also visit the Ethnographic Museum, set in a traditional house, along with the historic mosques and the main square area. The museum sits right at the heart of the castle experience, so you can combine it with a full wander through the fortress, the residential lanes, the viewpoints and the two historic quarters below without needing any transport. It’s an easy and atmospheric way to spend time in Berat’s UNESCO-listed centre.
