Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the most striking monuments inside Berat Castle, a jewel of 13th–14th‑century Byzantine architecture perched dramatically on the hillside. Its compact, cross‑in‑square design is beautifully proportioned, with alternating layers of brick and stone that create the warm, textured façade typical of medieval Berat. The church’s position is exceptional: from its terrace, visitors enjoy one of the finest panoramas over the Osum River and the whitewashed quarters of Mangalem. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and contemplative. Faint frescoes still cling to the walls, offering glimpses of saints and liturgical scenes painted by local masters. Their soft colours and expressive faces reveal the artistic traditions that flourished in Berat during the Byzantine and post‑Byzantine periods. The dome, though modest, filters gentle light into the nave, giving the interior a serene glow.

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands inside the walls of Berat Castle, on the southern side of the fortress in the old Kala quarter. It sits on a rocky outcrop with a clear view over the city and the river below, making it one of the more picturesque spots within the citadel. You’re already in the heart of the castle here, so everything else is just a short walk away. Nearby within the fortress is the Onufri National Iconographic Museum, housed in the larger Church of the Dormition of St Mary. The quiet residential lanes of the still-inhabited Kala neighbourhood wind around you, with a few other small Byzantine chapels scattered among the houses. Head downhill through the main gate and you enter the Mangalem quarter, full of the white Ottoman houses that give Berat its distinctive look. Across the Osum River, reached by the old stone Gorica Bridge, is the Gorica neighbourhood. In the lower town you can also visit the Ethnographic Museum and the small Solomoni Jewish Museum. The church fits naturally into a wander through the castle, so you can take in the views, the other churches and the museums below without needing any transport. It’s a peaceful and atmospheric stop while exploring the historic centre of Berat.
