Gorica Bridge is one of Berat’s most iconic sights, a graceful Ottoman‑era structure linking the historic quarters of Gorica and Mangalem across the Osum River. Built in the late 18th century, the bridge originally had nine arches, giving it a long, elegant silhouette that still defines the riverside landscape. Its stone construction and rhythmic arches make it one of Albania’s finest examples of traditional civil engineering. Walking across the bridge is a sensory experience. The arches frame views of Berat’s whitewashed houses climbing the hillside, while the river below reflects the bridge’s geometry like a mirror. One interesting detail is the slight curve of the deck, designed to withstand seasonal floods and shifting river currents. Locals once used the bridge as a key trading route, carrying goods between neighbourhoods that developed distinct cultural identities. Visitors can explore the riverbanks to admire the craftsmanship up close: carefully fitted stones, narrow joints, and the subtle variations in colour that come from centuries of weathering.

Berat Albania

Location

It is located in the very heart of Berat in southern Albania, crossing the Osum River. The address is Ura e Gorices, Rruga Antipatrea, Berat, Albania. Locally it is called Ura e Gorices. It connects the two most historic neighborhoods, Mangalem on one side and Gorica on the other. Originally built from wood back in 1780 and later rebuilt in stone, it is one of the oldest Ottoman bridges in Albania, with its seven arches sitting about ten meters above the water. It is only for pedestrians now, so you can take your time in the middle and just enjoy the view. From the bridge you look straight up at Berat Castle on the hill, the huge fortress that dominates the city. Inside the castle you can visit the Onufri Museum with its famous Byzantine icons and the Church of the Holy Trinity. Right at the ends of the bridge you have the Mangalem Quarter with its white Ottoman houses stacked up the hill, and the quieter Gorica Quarter with small churches like St. Spyridon and St. Thomas. A short walk along the river promenade brings you to the National Ethnographic Museum, the King Mosque, and plenty of cozy cafes with a view of the river.
