Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum

About

Ethnographic Museum of Kruja is one of Albania’s most atmospheric heritage houses, set inside a beautifully preserved 18th‑century Ottoman residence within the castle walls. The building itself is a highlight: stone foundations, wide wooden balconies, and a traditional interior layout designed for both family life and hospitality. Its rooms are arranged exactly as they would have been centuries ago, making the museum feel less like an exhibition and more like stepping into a living home. Inside, visitors can explore the oda, the formal guest room where elders once gathered for discussions and ceremonies. Its carved wooden ceiling, embroidered cushions, and low divans reveal the social customs of northern Albanian households. The women’s quarters display delicate textiles, jewellery, and weaving tools that showcase Kruja’s strong craft traditions. The kitchen, with its copper cookware and bread‑baking implements, offers insight into daily routines shaped by local produce and seasonal rhythms. One of the most interesting features is the collection of traditional clothing, including richly decorated wedding garments and regional attire that highlight Albania’s diverse cultural identity.

Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum
Location

It is located in the historic town of Kruje, about 30 kilometers north of Tirana. The address is Rruga Kala, Kruje, Albania, right inside the old bazaar area and just next to Kruja Castle. The museum itself is housed in a beautiful old Ottoman home from 1764 that once belonged to the Toptani family, built in the traditional Cadak style with wooden balconies and carved ceilings. It was turned into a museum in 1959 and today it shows everything from old kitchen tools and handmade costumes to the old bridal room and workshops, so you get a full picture of everyday life in northern Albania. Right next door is Kruja Castle, the symbol of Albanian resistance. Inside the castle walls you will find the famous Skanderbeg Museum dedicated to the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and the small Dollma Tekke. Right below the castle is the Old Bazaar of Kruja, a cobbled street full of souvenir shops, carpets, antiques and traditional crafts.
