Krujë Castle is one of Albania’s most symbolic landmarks, a hilltop fortress that served as the stronghold of Skanderbeg during the 15th‑century resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Its dramatic position above the town gives it a commanding presence, with sweeping views over the surrounding mountains and the Adriatic plain. The castle’s layered architecture reflects centuries of use, from medieval defensive walls to later Ottoman additions. Inside the complex, visitors can explore several compelling sites. The Skanderbeg Museum, built directly into the castle’s stone structures, presents weapons, documents, and evocative displays that trace the national hero’s campaigns. Nearby stands the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a traditional Ottoman residence that reveals domestic life through carved woodwork, textiles, and everyday tools. Walking through the ruins, you’ll find lookout towers, cisterns, and remnants of old barracks that illustrate how the fortress functioned as both a military base and a small settlement. One interesting detail is the castle’s strategic design: narrow passages and angled walls were built to confuse invaders and slow their advance.

Krujë Albania

Location

It is located in central northern Albania, in the town of Kruje, about 30 kilometers north of Tirana. The address is Rruga Kala, Kruje, Albania. The castle sits high on a rocky hill overlooking the whole plain and the Adriatic Sea in the distance, so you can see it from far away. Built in the 5th and 6th century, it became famous as the center of resistance against the Ottomans led by Albania's national hero Skanderbeg. Today it is not just ruins, it is like a small village inside the walls, with stone houses, cobbled paths and incredible views. Inside the castle complex you have the Skanderbeg Museum, a striking modern building built to honor Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg with armor, documents and replicas. Right next to it is the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a beautiful 1764 Ottoman house of the Toptani family that shows how wealthy families lived with old tools, costumes and traditional rooms. Just outside the castle gate you walk straight into the Old Bazaar of Kruja, a charming cobbled street full of little shops selling handmade carpets, antiques, copper and souvenirs. Nearby you also have the Dollma Tekke, a small Bektashi shrine.
